Students are able to create a product. In addition to this, students are connecting what they are learning with real world experiences.
This lesson is a culminating project based around multiplication and division as well as incorporating language arts skills. A rubric was provided to support the students throughout their project.
A major component of this project was critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making. Another major component is the use of technology to enhance real world experiences. Students were asked to use technology to create an authentic problem solving project using multiplication and division. The final project would demonstrate skill mastery and the level of understanding of the concepts being taught.
An authentic part of this task was the collaboration between local business owners. These owners explained the importance of learning both math skills and language skills in order to be success in the future. This brought a real world connection for the students. In addition to math skills, students learned the importance of language and communication skills.
This lesson was very successful in the classroom. The lesson provided students with a review of the Common Core Standards as well as provided them with creating an authentic technology-based project. Students were able to connect what they were learning with a career that interested them. Students shared this knowledge with business owners.
Creating engaged learning projects for students could be beneficial to any classroom. By allowing students to have real world, authentic experiences, students are gaining skills needed to be successful both in and out of the classroom. Teachers who use lessons such as these are increasing both interest and motivation for their students. In addition, students are building skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and using higher order thinking skills.
