4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding, & Global Awareness
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase
global awareness. (PSC 4.3/ISTE 5c)
Artifact: Diversity Blog
Reflection:
The artifact used to display evidence of diversity, global awareness, and cultural understanding was an excerpt from my blog titled Diversity, Cultural Understanding, and Global Awareness.
The blog details ways to model and facilitate digital tools to address the diverse student population. Specifically, it details the importance of being culturally awareness of the students in the classroom. It is important to ensure they truly understand experiences they may not have had thus far in their lives. A way to do this is using virtual field trips and other tools.
As an educator, it is important to put feelings and beliefs toward other cultures aside and treat all students as equals. However, it is important for those students to share their experiences if they feel comfortable. This creates a special learning environment where every child is exposed to a new cultural experience.
Using various digital resources in the classroom allows for students to become accepting of one another. These resources and experiences provide a rich, student-centered learning environment. As a teacher, it is my job to ensure my students are treated equally. I find learning about all cultures makes this possible. By being knowledgeable of numerous cultures, I am accepting of students who are different. I am able to provide all of my students with experiences which they may not have had.
These experiences provide students with meaningful, authentic learning. When students take responsibility for their learning and enjoy what they are learning, they are more likely to achieve more than students who find no connections. By providing students with virtual field trips, discussions with
professionals or pen pals from other countries, students are gaining cultural experiences which help them learn and accept others. These experiences shape them into professionals. As a school, it is important to ensure our students are cultural understanding.
