Artifact: Copyright and Fair Use Presentation
Reflection:
The artifact used to provide evidence of this standard is a presentation on Copyright and Fair Use for Educators. This presentation provides knowledge of the differences between copyright rules and fair use regulations.
In order to maintain a safe, healthy and ethical classroom, teachers must be familiar with these regulations. With technology emerging, being able to ethically and legally use technology is imperative. The presentation gives a complete definition for the difference between copyright and fair use. The presentation goes into extensive details regarding copyrighting. Copyright seems to be a confusing topic for many teachers; therefore, designing a simple and easy-to-follow presentation serves as a quality tool to clear any misunderstandings of copyright issues. The presentation also provides a list of items covered under copyright.
The presentation gives an equal amount of important information regarding fair use. Many educators are not as familiar with fair use. Therefore, the presentation breaks down fair use in terms that are comprehendible. Teachers also need to be familiar with the obtaining parental permission. Parental
permission should be sought anytime student’s names or faces are used. Usually, parental permission is received at the beginning of the school year stating students can be used in articles for things such as school websites and newspapers.
Copyright is always on the minds of educators. I found the research put into this presentation to be extremely helpful in my professional career. Since I was not at all familiar with fair use, I learned a great deal about it. I also learned scenarios regarding fair use. I learned as much about copyright also.
In order for a school to maintain ethical and legal standards, it would be important for copyright and fair use to be presented in professional
learning segments. This is a very important topic in education. Many educators are not familiar with any information regarding either topic. Not only is copyright and fair use important in materials, it is also important when dealing with students. Teachers should always gain parental permission when using student’s names and faces.
