Artifact: Digital Divide
Reflection:
The artifact which represents this standard is a blog titled Digital Divide. The digital divide is the divide between those students who have access to technology and those who do not. Often times the divide is present due to social and economical disadvantages. It is important to bridge the gap on the digital divide. In order to prepare students for more rigorous tasks, technology is essential.
While most students have access to technology at school, it is important to remember they may not have access at home. This creates the concern
regarding success with students. Do students who come from more affluent homes have more fluency and opportunities? Unfortunately, many students are missing out on this opportunity. As a way to bridge this gap, teachers should give equal opportunities to all students on projects and assignments. If teachers know their students, they should not assign tasks to be completed when technology is not available.
There are plenty of ways to diminish the gap. Students should be exposed and taught how to use technology while at school. This prepares them for
real-life situations. From a community standpoint, libraries are important to providing access to the students who do not have it. Parents should also be
educated on technology. Conducting parent nights at school would be a way to help parents educate themselves.
As I researched the Digital Divide, I found the gap to be more about rich versus poor. Unfortunately, as an educator, I want to change external
circumstances for my students. However, most of the time I can do nothing to change them. It is important to expose my students to various technology
resources and provide them with authentic learning experiences using technology. This will help develop the skills they need to be successful in life.
As a school, it is imperative to introduce technology to student immediately. Since technology is the way of the future, students need to develop
fluency in order to be success. By providing as many technology resources and engaging lessons as possible, students will be more successful. Teachers need to be educated on the important of technology use in the classroom. Teachers also need to understand the digital divide. Before blogging about it, I had no idea it existed.
