Students today have a golden opportunity we did not have in school: the chance to learn in a twenty first century classroom. Being an educator in today’s classroom, it is important to open up a new world of knowledge for students. Students need an experience that goes beyond a textbook. Richardson (2010) conveys the idea teachers need to understand and experience the twenty-first classroom before they can be successful in providing it to students.
How do educators begin this journey? First, it is important to have knowledge of the technology available in the
classroom or the school. Take time to learn how to use the technology. There are many professional learning opportunities in school and around the community to learn the basics of machines such as iPads. Research the capabilities of the technology. It is important for a teacher to take small steps to implementing technology into lessons. Start with something simple and add to it each week. While change isn’t easy, it is necessary.
Web 2.0 could look like many things in my school. I feel there are endless possibilities for teachers to integrate technology in the classroom. As I go through this semester, I feel overjoyed to be learning so many new ways to teach the students in my classroom. With over 100 different Web 2.0 tools (Dunn, 2011) which can be used in education, I feel I should take many ideas back to implement into my classroom this year. This day should not be looked at with dread but excitement for all of the creative ways we can teach.
